Nissan Patrol Rent in Salalah: 2026 Specs, Daily Rates and Real 4×4 Capability

Last updated: October 2026  |  Written by the Drive Car Rental Fleet Team, Salalah  |  9 min read

You can rent a 2026 Nissan Patrol 4WD in Salalah from Drive Car Rental from OMR 35 a day, collected at Salalah International Airport with no security deposit and no credit card needed. It seats up to eight, runs a 9 speed automatic with full four-wheel drive and terrain modes for sand, rock and mud, and it is the car we hand over most often for Jabal Samhan, the Empty Quarter and Khareef mountain drives.

We have rented cars from the airport since 2015, and the Patrol is the one people ask about by name. This guide covers what it costs, what is under the bonnet, where its 4×4 system actually earns its rate in Dhofar, and when you would honestly be better off with something smaller.

Key Takeaways

Price: from OMR 35 a day, lower per day on weekly and monthly hire, higher in Khareef.

Specs: 3.8 litre V6 (316 hp) or 3.5 litre twin turbo V6 (425 hp, 700 Nm), 9 speed automatic, adaptive air suspension, six drive modes.

Best for: groups of six to eight, desert edge trips to Ubar, Jabal Samhan, and wet Khareef mountain roads.

Not needed for: city, beach and main tourist roads. A sedan does those for less than half the price.

Booking: WhatsApp +968 9265 9484 with your dates for a fixed quote. Book 4 to 8 weeks ahead for July and August.

How Much Does It Cost to Rent a Nissan Patrol in Salalah?

A Nissan Patrol rental in Salalah starts from OMR 35 a day with Drive Car Rental. The final rate depends on three things: how long you keep it, the season, and the trim available on your dates. Pickup location does not change the price.

What you bookWhat to expectOur advice
Daily hire (1 to 6 days)From OMR 35 per dayGood for a weekend or a desert day trip
Weekly hire (7+ days)Lower daily rate than daily hireBest value for a full Dhofar road trip
Monthly hireLowest daily rate we offerPopular with project teams and long stay families
Khareef (late June to Sept)Higher seasonal rate, limited stockBook 4 to 8 weeks ahead

What is included: insurance cover, a pre-handover inspection, 24/7 roadside support, and airport, hotel or city pickup at the same price. What is not required: a security deposit or credit card hold. Fuel is on a same level in, same level out basis, so return it with the tank where you found it. Read more on rental car insurance in Oman if you want to understand cover before you sign.

For a fixed quote, send your dates on WhatsApp. We usually reply within minutes, and the number we send is the number you pay.

What Real 4×4 Quality Means in Dhofar

A badge that says 4WD does not tell you much. What matters in Dhofar is whether the car can climb loose gravel at Jabal Samhan, hold grip on a wet mountain lane in Khareef, and float over soft sand near Ubar without digging in. The Patrol does all three because of how its drivetrain, torque and suspension work together.

Terrain modes matched to Dhofar roads

Patrol drive modeWhere you would use it around Salalah
SandGraded and sandy tracks toward Ubar, Thumrait and the edge of the Rub al Khali
RockGravel and rocky stretches on the way up to Jabal Samhan and the escarpment viewpoints
Mud/RutWet, muddy lanes on Jabal Qara and around Ittin during Khareef
Eco / StandardThe Salalah to Mirbat coast road and the long highway north to Thumrait
SportOvertaking trucks on the Thumrait road with a full load

Torque and suspension, in plain terms

The twin turbo version puts out 700 Nm of torque. In practice that means the Patrol pulls up a steep gravel climb with seven people inside without the engine straining. The adaptive air suspension can raise the body for ground clearance off road and lower it on the highway for stability, which is why the same car feels calm on the Thumrait road and capable on a rough track.

From our airport desk

Most Patrol renters never use Rock or Sand mode, and that is fine. The real value for families is the weight, the space and the confidence on wet Khareef roads. If you are planning proper dune driving, see our desert driving preparation guide first, and never go into deep sand with a single vehicle.

How We Prepare Every Patrol Before Handover

A large 4×4 is only as good as its last check. Every Patrol in our fleet goes through the same routine before keys are handed over, and you are welcome to walk round it with us.

  • Tyres: tread and pressure checked on all four wheels and the spare, with the jack and wheel brace in place.
  • Air conditioning: tested front and rear. In a Salalah summer outside Khareef, this is not optional.
  • Lights: headlights, fog lights and indicators checked, which matters on foggy Khareef mountain roads.
  • Fluids and brakes: oil, coolant and brake checks as part of regular servicing.
  • Cabin: cleaned, all three rows and seat folding tested, so a family of eight is not surprised at the airport.
  • Paperwork: insurance documents in the car and any existing marks recorded on the handover sheet with you.

Who Should Rent a Nissan Patrol in Salalah, and Who Should Not

Rent the Patrol if the route or the group size demands it. Skip it if you are mostly staying in the city and on the beaches, because you will pay for capability you never use.

The Patrol makes sense if you are

  • A family or group of six to eight travelling with luggage. Compare with our 7 seater car rental for families options.
  • Driving to Jabal Samhan, Ubar or the edge of the Empty Quarter.
  • Visiting in Khareef and planning mountain drives to Ittin, Ayn Khor or Jabal Qara.
  • Hosting business guests or attending an event where the vehicle matters.
  • Camping or photographing in the desert and carrying gear.

You can save money with a smaller car if you are

  • A couple or small family sticking to Salalah city, Al Haffa, Mughsail and Al Baleed. A cheap rental car in Salalah like a Yaris or Sunny handles all of it.
  • Wanting some ground clearance without the size. A Hyundai Tucson or Kia Sportage 4WD covers Wadi Darbat and light gravel. See SUVs for rent in Salalah.

Nissan Patrol vs Other Large 4WDs in Our Fleet

The Patrol sits at the top of our 4×4 range alongside the Land Cruiser. Here is how it compares with the other large 4WDs you can rent from us.

Our honest view: if comfort on long drives and cabin space are the priority, choose the Patrol. If you want a tough 4×4 and budget matters more than luxury, the Fortuner does the same routes for less. Browse our full fleet to compare.

Where the Patrol Earns Its Rate: Routes From Salalah Airport

These are the drives our Patrol customers take most, with approximate distances from Salalah International Airport.

DestinationDistanceDrive timeWhy the Patrol helps
Wadi Darbat40 km45 minSteep approach road and wet ground in Khareef
Mughsail Beach and blowholes45 km45 minComfortable for big groups; any car works
Jabal Samhan viewpoint90 km1 hr 30 minLong climb, gravel sections, strong winds

Ubar sits within the Land of Frankincense UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with Al Baleed and Wadi Dawkah, so a Patrol trip north can take in history as well as desert. For more ideas, the official Experience Oman tourism site lists sites across Dhofar.

Driving a Large 4×4 in Dhofar: Safety Notes From Our Team

The Patrol is big, heavy and quick. Most issues we see come from treating it like a small car. These habits keep a trip smooth.

  • Check the weather in Khareef. Fog on Jabal Qara can cut visibility to a few metres. Look at Oman Meteorology before heading up, and use fog lights, not hazards, while moving.
  • Watch for camels. They cross mountain and desert roads without warning, especially at dusk.
  • Respect speed cameras. Oman uses fixed and mobile cameras. Official rules and fines are on the Royal Oman Police traffic services portal.
  • Desert rules. Carry extra water, tell someone your route, and lower tyre pressure only if you know how to reinflate. Never drive into deep dunes alone.
  • Mountain descents. Use a lower gear rather than riding the brakes. Our mountain road driving tips cover the Jabal Samhan and Dhofar escarpment roads.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to rent a Nissan Patrol in Salalah?

At Drive Car Rental, a Nissan Patrol 4WD starts from OMR 35 a day. Weekly and monthly bookings bring the daily rate down, and Khareef (late June to September) costs more because demand peaks. There is no airport surcharge and no security deposit, and the rate you are quoted is the rate you pay.

Can I pick up a Nissan Patrol at Salalah Airport?

Yes. Drive Car Rental operates directly at Salalah International Airport, so you can collect the Patrol when your flight lands and return it there when you leave. Hotel and city pickup in Salalah cost the same as airport pickup.

How many people can the Nissan Patrol seat?

The 2026 Nissan Patrol seats up to eight people across three rows, depending on the seat layout of the trim. With all three rows in use, luggage space is tighter, so for eight adults with big suitcases we usually suggest packing soft bags or sending heavy luggage ahead to the hotel.

Do I need a Nissan Patrol for Salalah, or is a sedan enough?

For the city, the beaches and main tourist roads such as Mughsail and Al Baleed, a sedan is enough and costs far less. The Patrol is worth it for Jabal Samhan, desert tracks toward Ubar and the Empty Quarter, Khareef mountain drives, or a group of six to eight people.

Can I take a rented Nissan Patrol into the desert near Salalah?

You can drive it to the edge of the Empty Quarter and Ubar on paved and graded roads. For serious dune driving, we recommend going with an experienced guide or booking our desert safari, because deep sand recovery needs skill and a second vehicle. Tell us your route when you book.

What documents do I need to rent a Nissan Patrol in Salalah?

Residents need a valid Omani driving licence and resident ID or visa. Tourists need a passport with a valid visa, their home country driving licence, and an International Driving Permit where the licence is not in English or Arabic. No credit card or deposit is required.

Is the Nissan Patrol good for Khareef season?

Yes. The Patrol handles wet mountain roads and fog better than a small car, thanks to its weight, four-wheel drive and strong lights. It is also the first large SUV to sell out in July and August, so book four to eight weeks ahead for Khareef.

Which engine does the rental Nissan Patrol have?

The 2026 Patrol comes with either a 3.8 litre naturally aspirated V6 (316 hp) or a 3.5 litre twin turbo V6 (425 hp), depending on the trim. Both use a 9 speed automatic and four-wheel drive. Ask us on WhatsApp which version is available for your dates.

Car Rental in Salalah for European Travellers: Winter 2026/27 Driving Guide

Short answer first. If you are flying from Europe to Salalah between October and April, you can rent a car at Salalah International Airport using your passport and your home driving licence, and most EU and UK visitors can enter Oman without a visa for up to 14 days. A small sedan costs roughly 18 to 27 euros a day, a 4WD for the mountains and desert costs more, and petrol is cheap enough that fuel barely registers in your holiday budget.

That is the quick version. The rest of this guide is written for the people we hand keys to every winter at Drive Car Rental Salalah Oman: couples from Milan, families from Prague, retirees from Munich, friends from Budapest who landed on a Friday charter and want to see more than the hotel beach. We have been renting cars in Dhofar since 2015, and the same questions come up at the airport counter every season. Here are the honest answers.

What this guide covers:

  • Why Salalah fills up with Europeans in winter
  • Whether your licence works and what papers to bring
  • Which car suits a winter itinerary
  • Real prices in euros and pounds
  • The driving habits that surprise European drivers
  • A 7-day self-drive route you can copy
  • How booking and airport pickup work with us

Why Europeans Head to Salalah Between October and April

Salalah has two tourist seasons, and Europeans own the second one. The Khareef monsoon from June to September brings Gulf visitors chasing green hills and drizzle. From October onwards the skies clear, daytime temperatures settle in the high twenties, the sea stays warm, and the charter planes from Europe start landing.

The numbers back this up. Oman’s Ministry of Heritage and Tourism reported that charter arrivals to Salalah grew 26% in the 2024/25 season to nearly 93,000 visitors, with new routes from Italy, Switzerland and Hungary added for the following winter (Connecting Travel). At the start of the 2025/26 season, local operators were expecting around 400 charter flights, with the first planes arriving from the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Italy (Zawya). One Salalah resort manager told the Oman Observer that his winter guests split roughly into quarters: Germany, Italy, Poland, and a mix of France, Slovakia, Czechia and the Gulf (Oman Observer).

Why a rental car matters more in winter

Most charter packages give you a hotel on the coast at Hawana, Al Baleed or Taqah and very little else. Salalah has no metro or tram network, taxis are priced per trip with no meter culture outside the city, and the places you came to see are spread out: Mughsail beach is about 45 minutes west, Wadi Darbat around 50 minutes east, and the edge of the Empty Quarter is a two to three hour drive north. Organised tours to each one add up fast for two people, and they run on someone else’s clock.

With your own car you can watch sunrise at the Mughsail blowholes, eat fresh fish in Mirbat at lunch, and still be back for sunset at the hotel. That flexibility is the main reason our winter bookings are dominated by European couples and families. If you want to compare the options before deciding, our guide on whether it is worth renting a car in Salalah breaks down the cost against taxis and tours.

Can Europeans Drive in Oman? Licence, Visa and Age Rules

Yes. The Royal Oman Police allow tourists to drive in Oman for up to three months from the date they enter, using either a valid home-country licence or an International Driving Permit (Gulf News). You must carry the licence and your passport whenever you drive.

Do you need an International Driving Permit?

If your licence is a standard EU photocard, you will normally be fine without one. Where we strongly suggest an IDP:

  • Your licence is printed only in a non-Latin script (Greek or Cyrillic, for example)
  • Your licence is an older paper version or has no photo
  • You want zero arguments if you are stopped at a checkpoint or need to claim insurance after an accident

An IDP costs around 15 to 25 euros from your national automobile club (ADAC, ACI, PZM, ÚAMK and so on) and takes a few days. It is cheap peace of mind. British drivers should note that the UK government’s own advice says a UK photocard licence can be used for a rental car in Oman for the first six weeks after arrival (GOV.UK), which covers almost every winter holiday. Our full explainer on whether you need an international driving licence in Oman goes into more detail.

Visa: most Europeans do not need one for short trips

Citizens of the EU, EEA, Switzerland and the UK can currently enter Oman visa-free for up to 14 days. You need a passport valid for at least six months, a return ticket, a hotel booking and health insurance (The Peninsula). Staying longer than two weeks? Apply for a tourist e-visa on the official Royal Oman Police e-visa portal before you fly. In August 2026 Oman also added a free 14-day tourist visa category to its regulations (Oman Ministry of Finance), so check the portal for the option that fits your passport.

Age and other requirements

RequirementWhat we ask for
Minimum driver age21 (23 for large 4WDs like the Nissan Patrol)
Licence held forAt least 1 year
Documents at pickupPassport, home licence, IDP if needed
Credit card or depositNot required with Drive Car Rental
Additional driverAdd them at pickup, same documents

One thing that catches Europeans out: Oman has zero tolerance for drink-driving, and any traffic fines must be paid before you leave the country, otherwise you can be stopped at the airport (GOV.UK).

Choosing the Right Car for a European Winter Trip

Pick the car for the furthest place on your list, not for the hotel car park. In winter almost every main sight around Salalah is on good tarmac, so a sedan is enough for most couples. You only need a 4WD if the desert or the rougher mountain tracks are on the plan.

Your tripCar we usually suggestWhy it works
Couple, beaches and town sightsToyota Yaris or Nissan SunnyCheap, easy to park in the souq, low fuel use
Couple or family, coast plus Jebel Samhan viewpointToyota Corolla or Hyundai CretaMore boot space, smoother on the mountain climb
Family of four with big suitcasesKia Sportage or Hyundai TucsonRoom for charter luggage and beach gear
Empty Quarter dunes, Wadi Dawkah tracksToyota Fortuner or Nissan Patrol 4WDGround clearance, proper 4×4, handles sand
Group of 6 or 77-seater SUVOne car instead of two, one driver

Automatic or manual?

Most rental cars in Salalah are automatic, and that includes the models above. If you need a manual, ask when you book. If you have only ever driven manual, give yourself ten minutes in the airport car park before joining the dual carriageway. Our comparison of automatic and manual rentals in Oman explains the difference in more depth.

When a 4WD is genuinely worth it

If you want to see Ubar, Shisr or real dunes in the Rub al Khali, rent a 4WD and do not try it in a sedan. Sand catches out confident European drivers every season, and getting towed out is expensive. Read our Salalah 4×4 rental guide and the desert driving preparation checklist before you go. Not sure which side of the line your plan falls on? Our post on SUV vs sedan for the Dhofar mountains answers that exact question.

What a Salalah Car Rental Costs in Euros and Pounds

A week in an economy sedan in winter usually costs between 110 and 160 euros, plus around 15 euros of fuel. Prices below are our typical winter ranges, converted at roughly 1 OMR to 2.25 EUR and 1.95 GBP. Exchange rates move, so check the live rate on XE before you budget.

Rates depend on dates, length of hire and how early you book, so treat the table as a realistic guide rather than a quote. Christmas, New Year and the February half-term weeks fill up first. For more on stretching the budget, see our breakdown of cheap rental car options in Salalah.

Fuel is the pleasant surprise

Petrol in Oman has been capped since late 2021, with regular M91 held at a ceiling of 229 baisa a litre (Oman Observer). That is roughly 50 cents a litre. A Yaris covering 500 km in a week uses about 30 litres, so you spend around 7 OMR, or about 15 euros, on fuel for the whole trip. Most stations are attended, so you stay in the car and pay the attendant by card or cash.

Deposits and card holds

Many international rental brands block 100 to 300 OMR on a credit card for the length of the hire. For a European on a week’s holiday that can mean 600 euros frozen on the card. We do not take a deposit or a card hold, so your holiday money stays yours. Insurance is included as standard. Our guide to rental car insurance in Oman explains what that covers and what it does not.

Driving in Dhofar: What Feels Different from Europe

If you drive in Germany, Italy or Poland, Oman will feel familiar within an hour. Traffic keeps to the right, signs are in Arabic and English, and the main roads around Salalah are wide and well kept. These are the things our European customers mention most when they bring the car back.

Speed cameras are everywhere

Fixed radar cameras sit along the coastal road and the Thumrait highway, and they are not always signposted the way they are in Europe. Stick to the posted limit, which is usually 120 km/h on the dual carriageways and much lower in towns and near villages. Fines are added to the car and must be cleared before you fly home.

Camels own the road

Camels and goats wander onto the roads around Mughsail, Taqah and the mountain stretches, and both the UK and Canadian governments warn visitors about it (GOV.UK, Travel.gc.ca). Slow down when you see one at the roadside, because where there is one camel, a few more are usually following. Try to avoid long drives in the mountains after dark.

Roundabouts and lane habits

Salalah has a lot of large roundabouts. Local drivers often take the outer lane to go straight through or turn left, so watch the car next to you rather than assuming European lane discipline. Indicate early and do not rush.

Phones, seatbelts and alcohol

Using a handheld phone while driving is illegal, seatbelts are compulsory for everyone in the car, and the alcohol limit is effectively zero. Children should be in a proper seat, so request one when you book.

For UK and Irish drivers

You will be driving on the right in a left-hand-drive car. The first roundabout is the hardest part. Ask us for a quick walk round the car at pickup and take the first ten minutes slowly on the airport road.

For the mountain sections, our tips on driving Oman’s mountain roads safely are worth five minutes of your time, and the official rules are published by the Royal Oman Police.

A 7-Day Winter Self-Drive Route Around Salalah

This is the route we sketch on the back of the rental agreement for most European guests on a one-week charter. Six of the seven days work in a sedan. Only day 6 needs a 4WD, and you can swap it for a guided desert trip if you prefer.

DayRouteApprox. drivingCar needed

Four of these stops, Al Baleed, Khor Rori, Wadi Dawkah and Shisr, are part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing for the Land of Frankincense, so the route doubles as a history trip. If you want more ideas off the usual path, have a look at our list of hidden places in Salalah most tourists miss and our scenic road trip routes around Salalah.

A tip from our team: start day 6 early. The desert road north is long and empty, and you want to be heading back towards Salalah before the light goes. Fill the tank in Thumrait, carry at least four litres of water per person, and tell us your plan before you set off.

Our team speaks English, answers the phone at 2am, and knows which mountain roads are worth your time and which are not.

Prefer not to drive at all? We also offer a car with driver service for travellers who would rather sit back and enjoy the views. Polish and French travellers can also read our language-specific guides for Polish visitors and French visitors.
